I have always loved companies that do little or pay little attention to worker safety and education on safety. They make comments like they should use common sense or suck it up butter cup, or it’s the operators fault he or she wasn’t paying attention. And although even large corporations have safety people, they are like the token person they have to employ to keep a COR or make it look good so they can get contracts.
Common Sense in loose term is defined as good sense and sound judgment in practical matters and we as free word think that COMMON is to everyone, and SENSE is on of five things like site, smell etc. They use practical matters as a catch all phrase to think that everything on the job site can be lumped into the one catch phrase note, well sorry Sonny Jim, case law in the world of Occupational Health and Safety in both Canada and USA never mind other locations in the globe state NOT TODAY not at any TIME!
Oh lets hire a group of PAPERED folks with degrees to assist us in our ventures and needs they can apply their logic to our practices and we won’t need a safety program or we have a small book around just in case the law comes around! They now believe like a Martin Luther moment that they have a Safety climate. Safety climate is the perceived value placed on safety in an organisation at a particular point in time. These perceptions and beliefs can be influenced by the attitudes, values, opinions and actions of other workers in an organisation, and can change with time and circumstance.
Logical Thinking means = a way to analyse a problem to come up with an answer sometimes using a formal system similar to mathematics (a process / disciplined method of thinking). Logical thinking, or incorporating logic into your thinking will ultimately help you to reach a conclusion which is as accurate as possible.
So what is common sense?
Common Sense means = Is a way of taking social understandings and rules, and applying them to a situation, by using common sense, doesn’t necessarily lead us to the truth.
That explains the difference in the most simplest form and easiest way to understand.
Logic is used to reach a conclusion using the most accurate route available to us / mankind.
Common sense however is not always accurate and can sometimes be based on assumptions, social acceptance and no facts.
Remember (to ASSUME can make an ASS out of U and ME)
And as you have incidents or people don’t report them or people go off ignorant in their merry ways to the long term injuries or WCB rate increase They still have no idea about “The safety culture of an organisation is the product of individual and group values, attitudes, perceptions, competencies, and patterns of behaviour that determine the commitment to, and the style and proficiency of, an organisation’s health and safety management.
And as the teams pat themselves on the back and say hire another one or we only had one fatal after all those other times, that not too bad, they still don’t get the scope or need of Safety leadership it is defined as the process of interaction between leaders and followers, through which leaders can exert their influence on followers to achieve organizational safety goals. The feature of this definition that most often confuses people is the concept of leaders and followers.
Oh yes the inspectors or OHS cops come around they did out the token safety person, quickly read the manual that has more dirt on it than the floors and say OH YES we have one of those, (I know a company that had five safety manuals, none of them authorized by the board of directors) and only use to impress clients to achieve bids pending the work they were doing and have not to this day even with a fatality done a proper review. AND NO THAT SAFETY PERSON IS NOT THE LOCAL COP OR STOP TO POLICE WHAT YOUR WHOLE TEAM SHOULD BE DOING COLLECTIVELY! They need to understand fully the Importance of Safety. A serious workplace injury or death changes lives forever – for families, friends, communities, and coworkers too. Human loss and suffering is immeasurable. Occupational injuries and illnesses can provoke major crises for the families in which they occur.
Safety has a lot to offer organizations. When done right, safety can transform corporate culture and bring about dramatic results in workforce engagement, production, and the bottom line. Creating the type of culture leaders want to see takes an integrated approach that involves people from all levels of the organization and introduces them to tools and methods for making effective change.
Safety in Action offers leaders and teams the knowledge, expertise, and networking they need to learn the strategies world-class organizations are using to change culture and create sustained safety excellence.
