Work stops at all city tunnelling projects after underground sewer death

A 44-year-old man who died Tuesday at a sewer line construction project in Edmonton was a city worker, Alberta Occupational Health and Safety says.

Work has stopped at that site and on all city tunnelling projects, including in Mill Woods and downtown “so we know what happened before we can resume our work,” city manager Linda Cochrane said Wednesday.

“Until we know exactly what happened, we don’t know if it’s a systemic issue.”

“We’re just heartbroken for the family and for the crews that worked with this gentleman and all the crew that work in tunnelling right now,” Cochrane said. “These folks are part of the Edmonton administrative family and when one of them hurts we all hurt.”
