Monthly vs Annual Fire Extinguisher Inspections: What's the Difference?

May 4, 20265 min read

Monthly and annual fire extinguisher inspections are both required — but they are very different in scope, who can perform them, and what gets documented. Here is what each one involves.

Alberta businesses and industrial operators are required to perform two distinct types of fire extinguisher inspections: monthly visual inspections and annual certified inspections. These are not interchangeable — they serve different purposes, are performed by different people, and produce different documentation.

Understanding the difference matters because doing one and not the other leaves you non-compliant — and leaves your extinguishers in an unknown state.

Monthly Visual Inspection: Frequency, Who Does It, and What It Covers

The monthly inspection is a quick visual check that confirms your extinguisher is in place, accessible, and shows no obvious signs of a problem. Under NFPA 10, it must be performed at least once per month. It does not require a certified technician — it can be completed by a designated, trained employee.

  • Extinguisher is in its designated location and not obstructed
  • Mounting bracket or hook is secure
  • Pressure gauge reads in the green (operable) range
  • Tamper seal and pull pin are intact
  • No visible physical damage, corrosion, or leakage
  • Operating instructions are legible and facing outward
  • Nozzle or hose shows no visible obstruction or damage

The monthly inspection must be documented. The date, the name of the person who performed the check, and the result (pass/fail) must be recorded and kept accessible. A verbal confirmation that 'someone checked it' does not satisfy NFPA 10 requirements.

For operations with large extinguisher inventories spread across multiple locations — oilfield sites, vehicle fleets, remote lease locations — a consistent monthly inspection process with proper recordkeeping is one of the most common compliance gaps found during HSE audits.

Annual Certified Inspection: What It Covers and Who Can Do It

The annual inspection is a hands-on, comprehensive service that must be performed by a certified fire extinguisher technician. It goes far beyond what the monthly visual check covers.

  • Full external examination of cylinder, valve, handle, and hose assembly
  • Verification of agent weight or pressure against manufacturer specifications
  • Internal examination (for applicable types and at required intervals)
  • Inspection of all mechanical components — valve, siphon tube, dip tube, nozzle
  • Confirmation that the extinguisher type and rating are appropriate for the assigned location
  • Replacement of tamper seal and pull pin if necessary
  • Application of current inspection tag with technician name, certification number, and date
  • Identification of any unit requiring recharge, 6-year maintenance, or hydrostatic testing

The annual inspection tag affixed by the certified technician is what satisfies the documentary requirement for compliance. It is what an HSE auditor, fire inspector, or insurance assessor will check first when reviewing your fire protection records.

In Alberta, fire extinguisher technicians are certified under the Intertek FERL (Fire Equipment Registered Listing) Program or equivalent provincial certification. Inuksuk Fire & Safety holds Intertek FERL Certification I-538 and our technician Richard Needham is authorized to perform annual inspections on stored pressure, pressurized water, and K-Class extinguishers.

The 6-Year Maintenance and Hydrostatic Testing Requirements

Beyond monthly and annual inspections, NFPA 10 requires two additional service intervals for stored pressure dry chemical extinguishers: a 6-year internal maintenance (emptying, inspecting, and recharging the unit with a full internal examination) and hydrostatic testing of the cylinder every 12 years.

These requirements are separate from the annual inspection and are triggered by the manufacturing date or last service date stamped on the cylinder — not by any visible condition of the extinguisher.

If you are unsure whether your extinguishers are current on all required intervals, contact Inuksuk Fire & Safety. We will review your inventory, identify any overdue service, and get your operation into full compliance.
